Hi, everybody

Just wanted to create this topic because I've had this question in my mind since I started logo design:

What's with Indonesia and Graphic Design? Do you guys have some kind of famous Graphic Design school, university there? What makes Graphic Design so popular in your country?

It's just that every time I check new designers signing up, they are all pretty much from Indonesia :) And it's not just LG, every design contest website out there has excess of designers from Indonesia.

I think because Indonesia is one of the most population country, but not enough job opportunities there or salary is quite low. So, they have to find alternative job opportunities. Even in my country Malaysia (Indonesia's neighbor), there are now almost 1 millions Indonesian workers. That is what I know...maybe I'm wrong about graphic design field.

I can't really tell, maybe because it's easy to get started and the payoff is big?

Also an Indonesian designer youtube channel recently posted a video about LG and that's maybe why recently theres many new designer from Indonesia joining (me included)

About the design school i can't really tell, but i'm on Sulawesi and the only design school well known here are just a state uni that opens a design major (Universitas Negeri Makassar). In Java has much more though but don't really know how's there.

Recently a designer asked me about Logoground in forum at one of a contest site which is many Indonesians. Not because I'm kind, it started because a designer copied my logo from Logoground and got ranked highest in a contest. So, I opened a forum thread in Logo Court. I see many view that forum thread. That donates recent phenomenon also I think. So, Ajleroux, don't forget my commission heehehhe

@kassy & @morabira you are not entirely wrong, it is undeniable that employment opportunities in our country are not as good as in other countries. That forces us to look for other alternative income as additional, some are successful and those that can consistently become fixed income, and some just follow the trend and many do not survive. I joined a lot of groups on Facebook, and right now the trend is the design business that can be downloaded repeatedly, namely stock designs and many more are font makers, and logoground is another alternative. This is really all about opportunities, and there's no denying, our country produces many talented designers, and often that inspires me.

I think Indonesia don't have a famous graphic design school.
I am from Indonesia, Celebes island.

But, graphic design is a job where you can work anytime and anywhere and can learn from many sources, that so suitable for Indonesian people.

It just my opinion

In my opinion, it's probably because Indonesian people love working alone (being freelancer) more than working for company which most of them offer sallary that tend to be low.. Despite that the designers can see that there's a big opportunity to stand out in the international range, they also think that that's the easier way to make lots of money..

Yup, many designers from Indonesia. In fact, more than 40% of all LG designers!

We had a large increase in new designers and logo uploads in the last week. We're reviewing about 600 new logos per day, up from the normal 200. We love having so many new designers joining LG, but it has been a bit of a bloodbath. We declined 1,700 of the last 2,000 uploads.

Also sad to see so much dishonesty. We banned >70 copycats this week, up from the previous average of about 10 per week. A round of applause for community reviewers please. :)

nice topic,

I think why people in Indonesia prefer to become a designer, because here when we join a company, we are burdened with tasks that are not commensurate with the salary we get.
By the way, as I know, in Indonesia there is no famous designer school. they study alone or study online with people who are professionals.

it just my personal experience and opinion

Interesting.

It's just that Indonesia isn't the only country with those problems, every developing country is like that. And Indonesia isn't even in top 100 poor countries, think about African states for example.

Maybe it's the cultural thing, to be able to draw, to paint all have their own effect to graphic design. For example we the Turkic people are more prone to trade. People don't take Graphic Design seriously around here.

And I just checked YouTube for logoground videos and you're right, they're all almost in Indonesian ) Don't understand what they're saying but I watched a video where a guy was uploading a smart energy logo, and I've been noticing a lot of smart energy submissions in the reviews since, all done in a similar manner/style.

Hi! I'm from Indonesia. I can say that most of Indonesian designers are self-taught as they learn designing software such as CorelDraw by themselves. Especially here in Bandung, there is a center consisting a bunch of printing companies which employ these self-taught designers. However, most of them have no proper understanding on mixing colors and not referencing to the recent style of the design world. And in my opinion, the increase of Indonesian registrants is possibly due to the promotion of LG by a number of Indonesian designers on Youtube.

I am from Indonesia, precisely in Bali my job here is the owner of a streetwear brand. Clothing brand that made me jump into the world of graphic design. I was at LG and other design sites to earn income while sleeping (extra money), logo design is a fun thing to be able to draw it anywhere and convert it to vector only takes no more than 1 hour for a simple logo maybe more precisely 30 minutes. American dollar has a large exchange rate with Indonesian currency, maybe that's what motivates most of the many designers from Indonesia

(Dear Indonesian friends,
admin said in the previous topic, we have to use English in communication in this forum, it's okay even though our English is not very good,

so designers who are not from Indonesia can still understand and provide valuable comments,
besides, in the future there will not be many other topics in various languages at LG.)

Actually it is true. But I forgot about the name of the village. As an INDONESIAN, we don't have a famous or great design school but for sure, yeap, we've learned about frum the internet and of course from the Indonesian peoples were successful as freelance or designer who created many tips and tricks and tutor in YouTube and many online forums around us. From 2014 I saw the popularity of graphic design increased dramatically, the more content creators like on YouTube or Instagram provide more information about the lecture graphic design. IMHO because of we Indonesian is very2 resilient when we make a logo. This is not about the money, this is about the passion to create and produce great logo :).

Why so many Indonesian jump in to the logo world? The bigger influence is so many social group on FB that inspire and push other/fellow designer and make a strong bond each other. Sometime the "expert" give a free lesson and sharing their experience to the newcomers.

Just for extra Information, Founding of one of honorable Logo Crowdsourching attended to gathering that held in Bali Indonesia by Indonesian Logo designer. And he very amazed with Indonesian Logo designer community atmosphere.

Hi, maybe because some young people in Indonesia (like me for example) have not found the identity / passion in high school, because we learn not to focus on one subject. Especially art is an interesting thing, so after graduating from high school see design as something free and cool.
And plus many Indonesian designers have become YouTubers, and they discuss websites to sell their design services, maybe this is why many Indonesians are racing to become designers.

Of course this is a good thing right? :)

This is a nice forum. Well, I'm from Indonesia. I don't think there is one standout Design University or School in Indonesia. There are many universities with departments on design like product design and visual comm design. But, I believe not all designers, even the best guys are enrolled from design school. I'm a bachelor in Statistics, so my degree has nothing to do with logo design. Indonesia is rich in diversity, not every designer you found is from urban area. Maybe some of them work in the village inside the bedroom.

There are several reasons why Indonesia has many designers.
1. Job opportunities. Graphic design is a job you can start since you're a kid. I start designing since I was 16 years old, I learned basic app tools from school subject. Nevertheless, I learned to make money from design after Ii was 23 years old. Kinda late, huh?

2. Passion. Graphic design is cool, right? When we are at school in Indonesia, we learn every kind of lesson from math, science, social, history, and laws. We don't really use all of them in real world. Maybe they aren't even our favorite lesson. So, we started to have hobby in graphic design and other arts.

3. Lots of influences. We recognized designing tools like CorelDraw and Adobe Tools from friends and relative. I learned the basic at school but the rest by myself and learning from others. We can also learn from Youtube and Googles for inspiration and help.

4. Freelance job & more money. Becoming graphic designer can give you opportunity to work wherever you are. I think graphic design is number one most favorite freelance job. It can also add you some other income. Take me as an example, my real job is Data Analyst at a ministry in Indonesia, I take graphic design orders to add more incomes aside from my monthly salary. And yes, just like the guys above said, the income rate in Indonesia is low and the life cost is high especially in urban area. The internet is bad too. Income using paypal is very meaningful because of the US Dollar. If the dollar price against Indonesian rupiah is high, we'll get more money if we withdraw our paypal money to our Indonesian Bank Account. Well that works with any other apps and accounts as long you are paid with dollars or pounds.

There are facts that for me contradict with the fact that Indonesia had many designers. Though great designers are plenty, design companies are not that plenty especially outside urban area, most of them are still starting business. Maybe printing company are plenty, they hire designers but it's not that kind of job that will do some awesome branding and such, maybe just do corel and photoshop stuffs to be printed. Although designers are plenty, there are a lot of bad designs that you'll find in the streets. Especially in the government offices, their designs like website, social media, logo, banners and others are mostly bad.

I hope this help.

Recently, I have increasingly noticed that designers from Indonesia are too much inspired by the logos that are posted here on LG. Try to copy colors, style, idea. This once again emphasizes their lack of professionalism and lack of design ethics.
Such designers throw a bad shadow at Indonesia in general.
If you look at the registration of new designers on the LG website, you get the feeling that all of Indonesia has decided to register here.
This does not mean that Indonesia is the capital of creative people. It looks more like people are looking for easy money and mistakenly consider logo design a simple job.

By no means do I want to offend all Indonesian designers! I know many whose work I admire.
There are great Indonesian designers who, for many, can be a good example.

But still there are many who, in an attempt to make quick money, violate copyrights, as they do not have sufficient professional experience. I will say more, they become professional imitators.
You will say that such people exist in every country and I cannot but agree with this. But ... somewhere there are more such people, and somewhere less.
Let's respect each other and not cast a bad shadow on those beautiful designers who show us that Indonesia is a country where there are gifted creative people.

Once again, I'm sorry if I offended anyone...

Hello

Previously Introducing My name is Adnan, from Indonesia

I will explain about how most of the designers came from Indonesia
First, because most young people from the age of 15 and older are interested in design. So since young they have learned to design anything, from logos, banners, etc.
Secondly, indeed our population is large, especially in Java, and many of us have a variety of jobs, even many of our side jobs are carried out. Even I, who was still in high school, also worked side by side as a designer
Third, the emergence of reliable designers who motivate people who are interested in designing

If that is my opinion now living in Indonesia. I am also still a person who is practically a beginner, because I am only involved in design work. And also I am still a student

About that I can add in this forum
I thank all of you who have read my opinion

Greetings

I think before someone calls for help he / she must first have (or learn) enough technical and creative skills to continuously call for help. Not because someone is trying to solve a challenge in a specific logo, but to ask for help with the basics of logo design. You can expect that we do NOT want to go to the level of mediocre forums where beginners want to create a logo with Paint and Excel.

Like you, I support the idea of an test or admission process. Mainly to tackle copycats and also to avoid the worst powerpoint and paint misery.

Agree, but I also don't want to learn others how to design, especially not beginners or at least, not for free :) Maybe LG could make different arrangements for that, but I doubt it will be worthwhile.
Those YouTubers who brought them here, also make money making reviews.

Of course, this isn't my business and people are free to do what they want, and I could just ignore all that, but I obviously, unconsciously and irrationally fooled myself that this would be a cozy little place that just a few of us are aware of :)

But I always stated that it is not my job to teach logo design. LG should not be the place for beginners. Just imagine the headache for clients when the handover files are a mess.

No offense brother, maybe i'm one of that beginners but in LG i feel like i have a great field for learning. I've found my new environment here and i love it.

I know this site is supposed to be a room for selling our logos. Like another field of selling, there are always a bit of "lucky" factor whether our goods are sold or not. And in LG that lucky factor is started after the submissions are getting approved. Before it getting approved, there's a big hand from our personal skill in designing. And to improve the skill, some of us (the beginners) trying to upload our "newbie" work here. When it get declined, it is a sign that our skill is far below the standard (it's based on the declined reason). Hence, we tend to try it again for making other logos, and i believe that we can improve our skill time by time.

That's just my opinion. I don't mean to underestimate LG as a professional logo selling field. I hope you get my point. Thank you

"in indonesia people is so lazy"
do you talk about people around you, or most Indonesian people?

I think your statement needs to be revised, and you need to apologize to them who spend their time working and studying in most of their days.

Wow. That's some serious stereotyping. I wouldn't dare to say that to any country's description. Especially to fellow LG community.

"...but I watched a video where a guy was uploading a smart energy logo..."

Ha ha ha. Right, This is also one of the channels I watch (my first time creating an account on LG), how to upload a logo on LG

@ajleroux

Did the increase in the number of new members (more than 40% of all LG designers from Indonesia) increase during the covid pandemic?
As far as I know, in our country (Indonesia) during the covid pandemic, many have turned to looking for income online. One of them that is phenomenal is buying and selling online "betta fish" ;)

*I am sorry, my English is not good

Lazy is not a reason to be a designer, there are those who bother just to upload 1 logo accepted at LG. It's hard work not lazy :)

I am indonesian...

Do you share your own experiences? You are Indonesian, and you are lazy?

Pathetic

Are you one of them? Because you start to learn design. Or maybe, do you think that people can make easy money from design?

@kassymkulov

You are right, in almost every design platform many are Indonesian citizens. But keep in mind, the population here is very large and the population is almost uncontrolled. So that it can add to a new problem in our country, namely the lack of public jobs. On the other hand, many of us are very interested in the field of design where the number of applicants is not in accordance with the field of work in this field, and the wages are still below standard. So we usually mostly use design platforms to get profit which is higher than the wage standard in our country.

But an additional problem is that many people from our country do not understand and appreciate creative work like this. So that it can reduce the quality of wages that should be paid to creative workers like us. But keep in mind when you start from scratch to get into the design field, you will get a lot of support and input from our predecessors in social groups and communities, so that can accelerate the growth of new designers.

I'm Indonesian, and I'm agree with @vectorgard statement.
And following that statement, I think LG should do some evaluation on designers credibility, not only the logo itself, to maintain the quality of logos in LG. Maybe do some kind of validation process before any new designers apply? I hope this make sense @ajleroux

Hi yantoagri,

Many thanks for the suggestion.

We considered a designer vetting process, but decided against it for now. I think the review process plus community review already does a good job of maintaining the quality of work on LG. We may come back to this idea in the future though.
